Committed to quality and safety – Cognis starts voluntary REACH registration of its pharmaceutical excipients
The European Union’s REACH chemical legislation also affects the pharmaceutical industry, as it covers all substances for synthesis or processing used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. To offer its customers the best possible service, Cognis is submitting its complete range of pharmaceutical excipients and products for inclusion in the pre-registration process. This step ensures that Cognis Nutrition & Health will be able to offer an uninterrupted supply of these products.
The EU’s REACH regulations on the registration of chemicals have come into force. Cognis is in the process of pre-registering the PharmaLineTM range of high-purity oleochemical-derived excipients which includes all the products that it offers to the pharmaceuticals and healthcare industries. “Recently, the ECHA concluded that pharmaceutical excipients are covered by the REACH regulation,” says Thomas Rosen, Global Product Line Manager Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare. “Therefore, we want to offer our customers the best possible support.” As a result, Cognis will submit all its EU-manufactured pharmaceutical products for inclusion in the pre-registration process, and even substances manufactured in non-EU Cognis affiliates but used as ingredients by customers inside EU. By pre-registering these substances, Cognis ensures that they will remain legal until the final REACH registration deadline, so that customers can plan for the future knowing these ingredients will be available until at least December 1, 2010.
The implementation of REACH also means that new rules now apply to Cognis’ safety data sheets. The necessary changes have already been made, and the sheets supplied to customers in the EU are now fully compliant with the new regulations.
